Houston-based duo Breathing Space, made up of Emi Salinas and Maura Dooley, have been crafting dreamy lo-fi gems since 2019, blending Emi’s warm textures and nostalgic progressions with Maura’s bluesy, soulful vocals. Their newest single, “BAD POSTURE”, continues that journey with raw honesty and a sound that feels both intimate and expansive.
The track is more than just lo-fi and soul colliding; it’s a cinematic exploration of vulnerability. Maura’s sensual, jazz-tinged voice floats over smooth production, pulling listeners into a mood that’s equal parts nostalgic and deeply human. The instrumental bends and sways like smoke in a dimly lit room, while her flowing melodies guide us through a story of pain, resilience, and connection.
Emi shared the inspiration behind the track, reflecting on how she saw Maura when their friendship and creative bond first took root:
“There was a depth to her that I admired. After spending so many years being sheltered growing up, I couldn’t imagine how someone my age (20) could be so weathered; carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. Someone who felt like they had lived a hundred lifetimes, could seemingly fit in anywhere, yet was battling a deep darkness. No one else I knew was drinking their tequila on the rocks, cigarette in one hand, a smile, a deep connection with who they were talking to, and still a glimmer of tears welling up in their eyes. In my head, her bad posture was a result of all the hurt she was holding inside.”
That raw reflection is at the heart of “BAD POSTURE”, turning the song into something that lingers far beyond its runtime.
As Emi put it best:
“I hope people can recognize the pain in one another. I hope it makes it easier to see others’ humanity because of it. To know that we all hurt in some way, shape, or form I think is another path to truly loving the people you’ve never met, as much as you would your own kin. If you can see your own hurt in someone else’s eyes, let that be a reason you approach every connection moving forward with kindness and gratitude.”
Beyond the single, “BAD POSTURE” carries even more weight for Breathing Space fans, it’s the last single before the duo’s forthcoming EP, which will officially mark the first distinct era in their discography. The project, titled “JAMSANDWICH” (because, in their own words, “we’ll be putting all the jams in the middle :3”), will include their recent singles along with a special unreleased treat for fans who’ve caught their live shows.
With “BAD POSTURE”, Breathing Space doesn’t just give us another dreamy, lo-fi record, they give us a piece of themselves. It’s a song about carrying weight, seeing humanity in others, and learning how to love through the pain. And if this is just the last taste before “JAMSANDWICH”, fans are in for something truly unforgettable.
