Kieran McKenna Turns Up the Guitars on “TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR”

Kieran McKenna does not sound particularly interested in choosing a lane. “TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR” makes that pretty clear. Guitars come in with some grit, the drums have a proper punch to them and the bass keeps the whole thing moving at a pace that feels more instinctive than carefully calculated. It is catchy, but there is enough edge left in the production to stop it from feeling too neat.

The track has the spirit of a band playing in a room together. You can feel the movement in it. The guitars have a little dirt around them, the drums are allowed to hit and the arrangement builds without becoming overly dramatic about it. McKenna follows that same approach with his vocals, moving between quieter passages and more fired-up moments when the song calls for it. Calling it indie rock would make sense. So would alternative pop or punk. None of them quite tell the whole story, though, and that is part of what makes the single work. McKenna seems more interested in making something that feels good than making sure it fits neatly into a genre description.

That attitude is hardly new for him. Originally from South Bend, Indiana and now based in Los Angeles, McKenna has already spent time moving between hip-hop, reggaeton, alternative music and songwriting. His Spanish-language TikTok content has also helped him build an audience online, while previous releases under names such as graycielos and 22GRAY show just how much ground he has covered creatively. “TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR” feels less like a departure from that history and more like another piece of it. Produced alongside Los Angeles producers Max Topelson, Sighmon and Berlo, the song finds a comfortable middle ground between immediacy and experimentation. It can hit hard without losing the melodic side of things, and underneath all the energy there is a slightly wistful feeling that gives it more staying power.

Then there is “Dogs,” which makes for a particularly good pairing. Putting the two out as singles gives listeners a wider look at McKenna without making either track feel like homework. They work as individual releases, but together they make the case that there is considerably more to come from him. “TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR” is the kind of alt track that is easy to have fun with. It is loose, it is loud in the right places and it never seems too concerned with behaving itself. More importantly, it sounds like McKenna is comfortable letting different parts of his musical background collide.

That could end up being one of his biggest strengths. Rather than stripping away the contradictions to create one easily marketable sound, he seems happy to keep adding to the picture. Keep an eye on Kieran McKenna. This feels like an artist still figuring out just how far he can take it.
