Larnell Lewis, a Toronto-based drummer, composer, and Grammy-winning member of Snarky Puppy, continues his evolution as a solo artist with his third album, Slice of Life. A master of jazz fusion, Lewis blends Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian, and R&B influences into a deeply personal and reflective body of work. Building upon the foundation set by his Juno-nominated In the Moment (2018) and Relive the Moment (2020), Slice of Life is more than just a technical showcase—it’s a heartfelt exploration of family, growth, and gratitude.

At its core, Slice of Life is an intimate musical diary, one that Lewis uses to express his journey through fatherhood, personal loss, and the wisdom gained along the way. Unlike many instrumental jazz albums that rely solely on virtuosic displays, this record prioritizes storytelling, using melody, harmony, and rhythm to paint vivid emotional landscapes.

One of the standout aspects of Slice of Life is Lewis’s ability to seamlessly integrate his family into the creative process. Collaborations with his wife, steelpan artist Joy Lapps, add layers of warmth and authenticity, while recordings featuring his children make this album feel like a living, breathing testament to his love and devotion.

Standout Tracks

"Hide and Seek" – This track carries a unique charm, featuring Lewis’s daughter Kaya’s voice. Her presence adds an innocence and vulnerability that contrast beautifully with the dynamic, intricate drumming that Lewis is renowned for. It’s a reminder of the simple joys of childhood and the fleeting nature of those moments.

"All the Stars" (feat. Wade O. Brown) – A poignant piece that delves into the struggles of being away from loved ones. The smooth, soulful vocals of Brown carry the weight of longing, while Lewis’s percussive touch adds both urgency and warmth, mirroring the emotional push and pull of life on the road.

"Little Butterfly" (feat. Joanna Majoko) – A delicate and deeply moving tribute to a child lost to miscarriage. Majoko’s vocals are ethereal, carrying both sorrow and hope, while the arrangement wraps around the listener like a comforting embrace. Despite its somber theme, the song ultimately leaves one with a sense of resilience and renewal.

"Hiding Place" – A powerful solo drum piece that embodies the idea of finding solace amidst chaos. Lewis’s drumming here is both intricate and meditative, a conversation between himself and the instrument that speaks volumes without the need for words.

An Album with a Message

Beyond its musical brilliance, Slice of Life serves as a reminder of life’s interconnectedness. Lewis’s own words from the album’s press release encapsulate this sentiment perfectly: "You have everything you need to do what you are destined to do. You are living an experience that is intertwined with many around you and you are not alone. Learn to pace yourself, face yourself and love yourself." This statement is woven into every note, making the album feel like a conversation between Lewis and his future self—a message of self-acceptance, perseverance, and gratitude.
