Let’s just get this out of the way—we’re still floating.
We had the absolute honor of getting an early listen to Rats-Tails’ upcoming single, “Public Domain,” and trust us when we say this: the world isn’t ready for how good this one is. The track officially drops soon (keep your eyes peeled!), and it’s the first taste of their debut EP, dropping this October, simply titled The EP. If “Public Domain” is any indication of what’s coming, October might just become our new favorite month.
So, what does it sound like? One word: dreamy. But not in that vague, overused way. This is the kind of dreamy that makes you forget you’re still in your kitchen standing in front of the sink with the tap running. It’s got that warm, transportive quality that melts stress right out of your bones.
The first half of the track eases you in with this soft, immersive glow—like falling backwards into a field of color and sound. There’s a richness to the textures, and the songwriting? Impeccable. It paints in feelings more than anything—swells of emotion, little moments of light. You can hear how much care went into placing every note, every lyric, every flicker of reverb. It’s all intentional, and it all works.
And just when you think you’ve found your peaceful little corner of the song, the electric guitar steps in mid-way, and boom—new dimension. It doesn’t punch in, it lifts in. From there, the beat starts to ride out and you’re not even grounded anymore. Whatever you were thinking about before—gone. It’s like being carried into the stratosphere by sound. A total escape.
There’s something mature and self-assured about this track too. It’s not trying to be anything it’s not. It just is—fluid, dreamy, confident. Rats-Tails clearly understand their sound already, which is honestly wild for a debut project.
We can’t wait for the world to hear “Public Domain.” This one’s going to find a home in a lot of playlists—and in a lot of hearts.
Stay tuned. You’re going to want this in your ears the second it drops.
